A Landscape Underfoot

BESPOKE

For Oliver Treutlein Carpets, every bespoke creation begins with a conversation around material, craftsmanship and atmosphere. For more than
four decades, the tight-knit family-run German company has developed custom carpets for yachts, private residences and architectural interiors, each one conceived not simply as a surface, but as an integral part of a space’s identity.

Created for the Skylounge of M/Y Agnetha (pictured here), OT’s bespoke carpet was designed
in collaboration with LUCA DINI Design & Architecture as the visual and emotional anchor of the space

Let “colour” speak

OT’sphilosophy finds a compelling expression aboard M/Y Agnetha, the 55-metre Heesen yacht whose Skylounge provided the setting for one of the German company’s most technically demanding and visually evocative recent creations. Designed in collaboration with LUCA DINI Design & Architecture, the rug was conceived not as an accessory, but as the emotional and visual anchor of the room – a landscape underfoot that brings the entire interior into dialogue. As Silvia Margutti, Lead Architect at Luca Dini’s studio notes, “the brief that defines the vessel’s interior was rooted in the vision of quiet luxury – but it found this true voice through a dialogue with Laurens Last, whose arrival at the helm of Heesen brought a fresh and new approach, fully reflected in the chromatic energy of this rug, a willingness to let “colour” speak.” The concept draws on the meeting of sea and land, translating natural atmosphere into texture and tone. Sweeping through pale, aqueous shades into notes of caramel, amber and rich ochre, the design evokes water, sun-warmed stone and the soft glow of skin after a long afternoon at sea. Organic and immersive, it introduces colour not as ornament, but as mood: fresh, warm and quietly radiant.
To realise this effect in material form, OT combined 100% velvet wool – selected from the finest and purest New Zealand wool fibres – with 100% pure silk. This pairing creates an exceptionally even surface capable of carrying the design’s sculptural depth, while the contrast between the two noble fibres enhances the play of light across the carpet. The result is a surface that feels both serene and alive, changing subtly with movement and shifting daylight. Its painterly gradient was among the project’s greatest challenges. In order to achieve a seamless chromatic flow across the rug, 35 individual tones were dyed and blended into one another, with colour transitions changing every two to three centimetres throughout the piece. This extraordinary level of modulation demanded not only precision in planning, but an intense degree of technical control during production.

The rug’s distinctive three-dimensional carved effect added a further layer of complexity. Executed entirely by hand, this sculptural finish could only be entrusted to OT’s most experienced craftspeople and required a full week of dedicated work on this piece alone. It is this mastery of technique – where artisanal skill meets aesthetic restraint – that continues to define the Treutlein approach.
Timing, too, was critical. Created for presentation aboard Project Agnetha during the Monaco Yacht Show 2025, the entire piece was completed within just eight weeks. From the selection of raw materials to dyeing, handcrafting and final delivery, each stage had to align seamlessly. Finished late on a Monday night, the rug departed the Meerbusch headquarters the following morning with OT’s fitting team and was installed on board in the early hours of Wednesday, just as the show began.
The finished design does more than complete the Skylounge – it gathers it. Against walnut, light oak, bronze, fabric and art, the carpet establishes cohesion through softness, movement and colour. Here, Oliver Treutlein Carpets demonstrates what it does best: transforming extraordinary craftsmanship into an atmosphere that is felt as much as seen.

Gemstones are everyones best friend

Monaco Yacht Show 2025

We can’t believe it – Monaco Yacht Show 2025 is already over! Time for a review and we must say, we are amazed with the great time we had again. Following last year’s Urban Carpet, which delighted our visitors with its simple colour design and detailed images of landmarks from around the world, we have decided for a colourful carpet again this year. However, we didn’t work with just one colour! We have created an extraordinary design in two carpets featuring over 100 colours!

Agate Elegance – a masterpiece of nature and craftmanship

It begins with our wall carpet, which represents a rough, stony surface in shades of grey with sparkling details. Clearly, it’s the surface of a stone. But this is no ordinary stone, as revealed by the streak of light running down the centre of the carpet. It’s an Agate gemstone and at its heart lies a veritable spectacle of colour!

This brings us to the floor carpet of our exhibition, which reveals the cut inner surface of the Agate stone. With its organic shape and exactly 103 colours, it is a realistic representation of the works of art that nature can create. These natural artworks are characterised by unique structures with sparkling elements, which we were able to incorporate into the carpet using various processing techniques thanks to our craftsmanship expertise.

Gemstones last forever

Agate stones are created over millions of years from volcanic rock and are valued for their robustness and durability. Don’t worry, you won’t have to wait that long for your OT carpet! However, we also associate the robust and durable features of the stone with our product. Thanks to their high quality, OT carpets are made to last and are known for providing decades of enjoyment. To achieve this, we rely not only on our excellent craftsmanship, but also on excellent and natural materials. For our wall carpet, we have used selected wool and linen yarns, including pure linen, velvet wool and semi-worsted New Zealand wool, which create a matt, organic look. The materials of our floor carpet complete this perfectly: made from bamboo fibres for a glossy and luxurious finish, the carpet also features areas of lurex to represent shimmering crystal formations. But that’s not all! In addition to their visual qualities, our selected materials also ensure that Agate is probably the softest stone you will ever touch!
In order to combine all these features in our product, we worked long and hard with our own designers and producers, and we are still delighted with the fantastic feedback our work received at the show. We had the best time welcoming familiar and new faces to our booth in Parvice Piscine and discussing ideas and projects. Thank you so much for visiting us! Overall, we are very proud and grateful that we have been able to pursue our passion as a family-run company for 45 years now. Inspired by the durability of Agate stones, we hope to continue our work with our loyal and new clients for many more years! But for now, we look forward to getting creative with our team again soon and inspiring you with our new ideas at the Monaco Yacht Show 2026!

OT proudly presents: The Frame Collection https://www.olivertreutlein.com/fr/2024/12/03/ot-proudly-presents-the-frame-collection/ Tue, 03 Dec 2024 13:21:53 +0000 https://www.olivertreutlein.com/?p=2892

OT proudly presents: The Frame Collection

Project: Frame Collection
December 2024

Design: Julia Treutlein, Meerbusch, Germany
Realization: Oliver Treutlein GmbH, Meerbusch, Germany

We’ve all seen it and been impressed by it: the extraordinary wall art and plastered ceilings in old castles and palaces, such as Palace of Versailles, Neuschwanstein Castle, Windsor Castle and many others.

Inspired by this ancient craftmanship, which has never gone out of style, Julia Treutlein came up with the idea of turning things upside down. Everything is a question of perspective and OT wants to chance your view on frames for your home, to make it a perfect place for every occasion: The frame for your dinner table with family and friends. The frame for a cozy evening beside the fireplace. The frame for a playful afternoon on the floor with the kids. A frame to discover the world. Always being able to experience OT carpets closely as a masterpiece of craftmanship.

A modern twist with natural components

In designing and developing this very special Frame Collection, we wanted to give ancient handcrafts a modern twist: Baroque elements and geometric ornamentation meet the simplicity and elegance of finest natural materials. Pure N.Z. Wool, Wool’n Tencia and Bamboo are tufted and carved by hand into textile frames. Our experience allows us to accomplish three-dimensional sculptural surfaces in one carpet. And there are no limits in variations:

‘Oak’ gives you guidance through straight lines and rectangular elements, ‘Ash’ brings playfulness with differently sized round elements, while ‘Beech’ excites with geometrical precision. In addition, we chose a natural and earthy color scheme for these an all other models, to enhance our belief in natural components.

So just as their role models, the plastered ceilings and walls that we admire worldwide, these carpets will also never get out of style and will additionally last a lifetime thanks to our high standards as a family business!

Here are a few samples from the collection.

ATTENTION: Colors may differ from the original. Color changes may occur depending on exposure to light.

From the Sydney Opera to the west of Germany

Monaco Yacht Show 2024 – A walk around the world with OT

For this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, we came up with a very simple yet mesmerizing idea for our show carpets. After years of working with vibrant colors for the show, which were indeed very appealing, we decided to manufacture something very different this time: Two carpets in a warm beige colour, which gave our stand a very cozy and luxurious charm. Nevertheless, it was by no means too cozy or even sleepy at our stand – on the opposite, we were delighted with the large number of visitors and the exciting hustle and bustle at our stand. Our carpets were decorated down to the smallest detail with sights from all over the world: London, New York, Amsterdam, Berlin, Barcelona, Paris, Monaco, Sydney… even the adults became children again as they searched the carpet for familiar landmarks. From the Tower Bridge to the Sagrada Familia and the Louvre – no one has ever felt the world beneath their feet in such an appealing and comfortable way. It was fun for young and old alike and we were overjoyed by the positive feedback from our visitors.

From the Sydney Opera to the west of Germany

In addition to our beloved monuments carpet, we have dedicated the wall carpet on our stand to our home region Meerbusch, which is located near Düsseldorf in Germany. We consciously chose this contrast to the many great cities of the world as it embodies who we are and what we stand for: A family-run company, that has been allowed to produce hand-tufted carpets of the highest quality for 44 years now. While we are very grateful for the worldwide recognition of our craftsmanship, it is important to us to always look to our family values, which are strongly rooted in our home region.

When finest materials meet craftsmanship

As with all our carpets, we have made our show carpets with the highest care and using only natural fibres. The main components are made of bamboo, a very pleasantly soft fibre with an elegant shimmer. To give our carpets dimension despite their monochromatic colouring, we used finest New Zealand wool and linen for some elements of the landmarks. The unusual design also gave us the opportunity to apply various tufting, shearing and carving methods, allowing us to demonstrate the diversity

of our processing methods in a single work. All the hard work paid off – as we have already mentioned – we really enjoyed the enthusiasm of our customers and visitors. We would like to thank everyone who visited us at our stand at the Monaco Yacht Show this year and showed interest in our craft. We had so many great conversations! We would especially like to thank our long-standing customers, whom we are always pleased to see again. We have already gained a lot of inspiration from the interesting discussions and are looking forward to getting creative again soon for the Monaco Yacht Show 2025.

Honor and challenge for the City of Den Helder https://www.olivertreutlein.com/fr/2024/05/13/honor-and-challenge-for-the-city-of-den-helder/ Mon, 13 May 2024 10:00:12 +0000 https://www.olivertreutlein.com/?p=2523

Honor and challenge for the City of Den Helder

Project: Den Helder, Netherlands
September 2023

Design: Edith van Berkel, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Realization: Oliver Treutlein GmbH, Meerbusch, Germany

We had the honor and challenge to supply two huge free laying bespoke rugs for the City of Den Helder this month.

We had the honor and challenge to supply two huge free laying bespoke rugs for the City of Den Helder this month. Oliver Treutlein has a lot of experience with manufacturing big rugs and carpets for projects on land and water. Nonetheless, the council meeting room rug, hand tufted with 22 colors in finest New Zealand wool highlighted with ornaments in shiny bamboo silk with the size of 11,4 by 14,1 meter is one of the biggest one piece seamless rugs we ever did with its weight of 979 Kg. After the colors had been dyed which took 5 weeks the tufting, latexing, shearing and carving of the pieces took 14 weeks for our team to completion. We did not have any allowance speaking about time and sizes. We made it in time and the delivery took place as requested right before the new furniture arrived. After the summer holidays the representatives of the city will now work on an Oliver Treutlein carpet. And in the second beautiful historic hall we supplied weddings will take place. This is so exciting. We wish all the future couples good luck for the common future. They will say “yes” with our carpet under their feet and a view to the old marine base. We are grateful and so happy that we have been in involved into this very special project by the designer Edith van Berkel and the Gemeente Ten Helder. It was an honor to bring Ediths ideas to the floor. She has so well managed to create that matching carpet design with the beautiful historic building and related it with the maritime history of Den Helder.

Here some impressions from the working process.
